Detailed assessment of quality of life using several well-validated questionnaires that compare GH-deficient adults with matched controls has shown that GH-deficient patients perceive themselves as having much greater physical and psychological health problems: over one-third scored in the range that was consistent with psychiatric disturbance requiring therapy. Particular areas of concern were poor energy, emotional lability, low mood and social isolation. Following GH therapy in strictly placebo-controlled conditions, psychological wellbeing improved and returned to normal over a period of six months.
